ClassicalSawmill

The Sawmill generates massive once-daily bonuses of wood, at the cost of a per hour wood resource drain. Essentially, an amount (depends on the level of the sawmill) of the wood gathered by the logging camps is sent to the sawmill instead of the village storhouses to be refined. This refined timber is released once every 24 hours, with a sizable bonus on top of the wood that the sawmill had taken in.

Sawmills will generate more wood then a Logging Camp would have done in it's place, especially if upgraded quickly; even so far back as the classical age a level 3 sawmill will give 54,000 wood a day. However without supporting camps to supply it with wood to refine, it becomes nonfunctional. For example, building 4 sawmills instead of 3 logging camps and 1 sawmill is counterproductive because the sawmills will have no supply of wood which they can refine, and will generate a large negative wood production rating which will only serve to anger your people.

A sawmill can be built on either forest tiles or standard open tiles, provided that there is already a level 1 Logging Camp in the settlement. This is a very useful boost early in the game because wood is used in large amounts for most construction projects up to the Renaissance Age. After advancing to renaissance wood is replaced by coal as a resource, and the sawmill becomes an abandoned structure. At this point it should be demolished so that its location can be used for something else.
