Parade Grounds are essential for any army, regulating deployment and sending armies to the field. Each of these buildings provide a city with garrisons, and this restricts the number of armies that can be deployed at any time.

Garrisons and Flags[]

At the Parade Ground, "Armies" describe any units outside of one's city, include attacking units as well as garrisons/occupied tiles. Each city with a Parade Ground individually stores army slots, limiting the amount of armies in the field (from that city) at any one time. Slots or flags are used:

  • Attacking armies take a flag from the parade ground, and the flag is returned when the raid returns.
  • Capturing and occupying a tile creates a Garrison, taking up a flag while that army is outside the settlement; the army must be either destroyed, completely disbanded, or recalled before another army can be sent out in its place. Reinforcements assigned to the Garrison will be reallocated to the same town as the original capturing army, returning the slot.
  • Returning troops take up a single slot, but only from their destination. This slot can exceed the destination's usual limit (i.e., troops from A are stationed at Resource B. Sending these troops back to C will drop A's slot and use a banner from C).

Additional armies may be added to each city by upgrading the Parade Ground as below (approximately one extra flag per age), and extra upgrades from Brotherhood Society (usually 1 extra, often removed for new ages). The Arc de Triomphe wonder adds 2 per city.

Garrisons are the official term for army movements, viewable on a player's profile. However, garrisons technically describe the positions and movements of any unit, even if they are moving or at base. Garrisons are seen in the Empire Overview (except transfers and civilian transport), and player profiles. Unofficially, a garrison or army slot may be referred to as a flag or banner, owing to the awkwardness and technicality of the official terms.

Certain buildings require the Parade Ground to be used, such as Barracks, Watchtower (Building), Armoury (Building), Blacksmith (Building) and Stable. See the Aerodrome, Gunsmith, Factory and Vehicle bay for possible upgraded versions.
